Camping in the Delta

Thursday 18 October 2018

We were picked up from the hotel by a nice man called Atomic, he took us to the river in his jeep. Only five of us, as the rest had paid a lot more and were taken into the delta by a small airplane. We chose the more exciting option, and do not regret it!
Amber, Australia
Diogo, Brazil
Sabrina, Germany
Jean South Africa/UK and myself.
The others are:
Lucy, London. Nina and Frederico, Brazil. Beatrix and Rolf, Switzerland. Lauren and Jacob, Australia. Peter Germany/Poland.
We were then taken in a Mokoro for a two-hour trip, including lunch break, to reach our camp. On the way there we had to wait for a big elephant to get out of our way... I have no idea how many elephants we saw, they were everywhere, and I will miss the sound of them pulling the grass from the sea bottom.
Once at the camp we got our tents and then went on a little walk for about an hour. Saw elephants, zebras and lots of other animals. Behind the tree a few metres from our camp we had a huge elephant, luckily quite friendly.
The next day we got up early to start our pre-breakfast walk. We walked for more than 5 hours! My fitbit was going crazy, 22.000 steps even before breakfast :-O
In the evening we went out in the mokoros again to look at the hippos and enjoy the sunset - soooo beautiful. Before going out in the mokoros Jonathan came and told us there were giraffes right behind the camp, on the next island. Soooooo beautiful!
The family that owns the camp improvised a show for us, it was incredible! Five of us and 7-8 of them. The last morning there I was listening to the hippos, and later found out that they had actually been right there at our camp!
